Junior Rowing at Shannon Rowing Club

Interested in giving rowing a try?

Shannon Rowing Club welcomes boys and girls aged 11 to 14 who would like to try rowing and become part of our junior group.

You don’t need any previous rowing experience. Whether you have taken part in a rowing camp before, currently play another sport, or are completely new to rowing, you are welcome to come along and give it a try.

Our aim is simple: to introduce young people to rowing in an enjoyable and supportive environment where they can learn new skills, make friends and become part of the club.

A programme designed to make rowing accessible

We know that young people in this age group are often involved in other sports and activities. We don’t want trying rowing to mean immediately having to give something else up.

That’s why this junior group will train only at weekends, with no midweek training commitment.

Training takes place:

Saturday at 2.00pm
Sunday at 2.00pm

Sessions are primarily held on the water at our Annacotty facilities. If weather or river conditions mean that we cannot get on the water, training will move to Milford for a land-based session.

The 2.00pm training time has been deliberately chosen to make it easier for young people to continue with other sports and activities while also giving rowing a try.

Boys and girls train together

Our 11 to 14-year-olds train together as a mixed boys and girls group.

For us, junior rowing is about more than learning to row. We want young people to enjoy coming to training, get to know the other members of the group, make friends and feel part of Shannon Rowing Club.

As their skills and confidence develop, the group will continue to train together and will have opportunities to take part in appropriate rowing events and competitions.

Start with our six-week programme

New juniors begin with an initial six-week programme, giving them an opportunity to experience rowing and decide whether it is something they would like to continue.

During the programme, the focus is on:

  • Learning the fundamentals of rowing
  • Developing confidence and skills on the water
  • Training and working together as a group
  • Having fun and making new friends
  • Getting to know Shannon Rowing Club

The six weeks are intended to be the beginning of the journey rather than simply a short course. Those who enjoy rowing and would like to continue can progress with the group and become part of our junior section.

Interested in joining?

If you have a boy or girl aged 11 to 14 who would like to give rowing a try, we would be delighted to hear from you.

No previous rowing experience is necessary.

Register your interest and we will be in touch with details of the next opportunity to join our junior programme.
